When I'm feeling lonely and need someone to hold me. I look to this dynamic for healing.
Though it can not feel, it makes me feel as though I'm here on Earth.
It will never understand that I'm only human and I need it on a day full of tears.
To have space where I can be real and heal is the only therapy I can afford.
No that offends me or judgment coming from anyone but me. Just truth and some compassion if I remember to give it to myself.

Self-expression without judgment is so healing. One thing we do as advocates are normalizing the feelings and experience that someone is going through. I didn't comprehend how important this was until I started advocacy. Your experiences and feelings are valid for what you have been through. So many things go through your head when you are not voicing how you feel. Statements and questions like, Is it my fault? Am I being overdramatic? I have never been good enough. I should be happy things could be so much worse can run through your mind. None of these feelings do very much good for me. I end up normalizing how someone is treating me but don't validate how I feel. I release my strength and power for someone else to trample on. While I pick up the pieces silently and endure. I channel my frustration through art. In my consistent bottling up of feelings, I forgot how to stand up for myself in a way that makes sense. This behavior was learned and I'm on a path to unlearning it. It has been my way of coping for way too long and has not done me any favors. Art is helping me heal a be firm about who I am and how I feel.
Every artist knows that putting brush to canvas can be incredibly relaxing. The benefits art has on your mental health go further and deeper than that. There’s a growing body of evidence showing that the act of creating visual arts can have a profound effect on your mental health and well being.

Researchers out of Germany found that people who spent time creating visual art actually showed increased connectivity in their brains during fMRI scans, and demonstrated improvements in “psychological resilience”, a term describing a person’s ability to cope with negative emotions and remain happy and functional during stressful life conditions.
It can help prevent mental decline as you age
A recent study from The Mayo Clinic found that taking up visual arts can be an important tool to prevent the problems with memory and cognition that often come with age. Participants who described themselves as artists reported far fewer incidents of cognitive impairment compared to those who never took up art.
Regularly engaging in artistic activities seems to have a protective effect on aging minds. Even those who didn’t begin painting until late in life showed improvement, but the greatest benefit was for those who began in mid-life and persisted as they aged.
